Today is a very special Author Allsorts book birthday – it’s publication day for Dixie O’Day: In the Fast Lane, the very first collaboration between Allsort Clara Vulliamy and her mum, Shirley Hughes!
Here’s the blurb from Amazon:
Dixie and Percy can find adventure anywhere! Welcome to their world: a world of peril and daring, friendship and fun…
When the All-Day Race is announced, Dixie knows he must win first prize. But Dixie and Percy face two problems: Dixie’s car keeps getting them into trouble, and secondly, his arch-enemy Lou-Ella has a brand new sports car that leaves them in her dust.
But the race is full of twists and turns, thrills and surprises. Who will win the day?
Doesn’t it sound wonderful? I’ve loved Shirley Hughes’ books ever since I was a small child (Dogger has always been a favourite), and I adore Clara’s colourful and quirky stories, so this promises to be a very special book indeed, by a very special pair of authors.
Happy Book Birthday, Clara, Shirley and Dixie – here’s some yummy-looking cupcakes to help you celebrate!

I was born in London, daughter of author illustrator Shirley Hughes and architect John Vulliamy. My first experience of making pictures was being allowed to use up my Mum’s paints at the end of the day, which was like scraping the icing out of the bowl after baking. I studied Fine Art at Chelsea School of Art, The Ruskin and The Royal Academy. After graduating I began illustrating in newspapers and magazines, and doing a weekly cartoon in The Guardian. I started writing and illustrating children’s books when I had a family of my own, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I’ve made around 30 books, including The Bear with Sticky Paws, Lucky Wish Mouse and Martha and the Bunny Brothers. I live in Twickenham with my husband, our two grown-up children and a gang of cheeky guinea pigs.
